Resolution in solidarity with jailed workers and political prisoners in Iran
In Iran workers are routinely arrested for going on strike, for building a union or for celebrating May Day..
Arbitrary arrests and detentions, long prison terms, violent interrogations, beatings, even use of lashing to degrade and break down, denial of medical care to sick detainees, constant harassment in the form of court summons, heavy bails and daily threats issued against the workers and their families, and the ultimate weapon of cutting workers off their livelihood by firing them, make up a brutal regime of systematic persecution of labour activists in Iran.
Our demand is clear: the terror and violence against workers in Iran must stop! Workers in Iran should be able to freely exercise their fundamental right to set up their own organisations, meet, assemble and protest as they wish, take strike action, organise and take part in rallies, etc., without fear of being arrested and thrown in jail. All jailed workers must be immediately and unconditionally freed!
We call on all trade unions and human rights organisations around the world and all individuals and organisations appalled by the horrific human rights abuse in Iran to support and sign up to this campaign.
-We express our solidarity with Iranian workers and call for the immediate and unconditional release of all jailed trade unionists and political prisoners in Iran;
– We condemn the Islamic regime of Iran for its persecution of worker activists and political dissidents;
– We support the struggle of the workers and people of Iran for freedom, the right to organise and strike, and for welfare, equality, justice and a life of dignity;
-We call for the international political isolation of the regime in Iran and its boycott at the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and all world bodies.

Islamic regime of Iran out of ILO!
A regime which jails workers for fighting for their rights should have no place in the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
The regime in Iran continues its persecution of worker activists – from more arrests to harassment of those already in jail and their families. These activists are in prison purely for their union activities. Our campaign is working for the immediate and unconditional release of these activists, and calls on all trade unions and human rights organisations around the world to exert pressure on the Islamic Republic regime to help secure their release and for an end to persecution of worker activists in Iran. Currently, many worker activists and numerous political prisoners are in jail in Iran. Some of the jailed workers include:
Jafar Azim Zadeh is one of the union leaders and members of The Free Union of
Workers in Iran (Ettehadiye Azad e Kargaran e Iran) was arrested in the early
hours of Wednesday 30 April, ahead of a rally called by the Union for May Day.
According to the Union, Jafar has been moved to the interrogation ward of
the notorious Evin Prison, Ward 209, which is run by the Ministry of
Intelligence. This increases the risk of his subjection to torture and maltreatment,
which is the usual practice in this ward during interrogations. Jafar Azim Zadeh is one of the coordinators for a national pay rise campaign, which has so far attracted 40,000 signatures.
Behnam Ebrahimzadeh, who has been in prison since June 2010 on a five-year sentence for union activities, has been moved to Ward 209 of Evin Prison in Tehran. Ebrahimzadeh is a member of the Committee to Pursue the Establishment of Labour Organisations and a campaigner for children’s rights. He has been subjected to severe tortures during his incarceration. Also, during a recent assault on political prisoners in Ward 350, he was among the prisoners who were severely beaten up and injured. It should also be noted that Mr Ebrahimzadeh’s 15-year old son is ill with leukaemia, a fact that has added to his psychological traumas.
Shahrokh Zamani, a member of Tehran’s Painters Union and the Committee to Pursue the Establishment of Workers’ Organisations in Iran, was arrested in Tabriz on June 8th 2011 and transferred to Tabriz Intelligence Prison. In the Islamic regime’s court he was sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment because he had defended workers rights to organise and to demand better work conditions.
Reza Shahabi, a member of the executive board of the Union of Workers of Tehran and Suburbs United Bus Company, has been jailed for his part in the bus workers’ strike in 2006 and in building the bus workers’ union. He was arrested in June 2011 and sentenced to 6 years jail. Shahabi suffers from multiple medical conditions, including a severe back problem.
Mohammad Jarahi, a member of the Committee to Pursue the Establishment of Workers’ Organisations in Iran, was arrested in January 2012 and sentenced to 5 years in prison for union activities. Following a recent operation on his thyroid gland, the doctors have advised recuperation outside prison conditions. However, Jarahi has been refused medical leave.
Vahed Seyedeh, Yosef Abkharabat, Mohammad Molanaie,
members of the Committee to Pursue the establishment
of Workers, Organisations in Iran. They have been arrested in 15th
of February 2014 and sentenced to 2years in prison. Mohammad
Molanaie is 76 years old and been given 1 year prison.
Mohammad Mohammadi, a member of the executive board of the Free
Union of Iranian Workers, has been in jail since February 2012.
Rasoul Bodaghi, teacher and a member of the governing board of Teachers’
Trade Association, is serving a six-year sentence for union activities.
Abdolreza Ghanbari, teacher, is in prison for taking part in the anti-government demonstration in December 2009. He is serving a 10 years sentence.
Join us to demand the immediate and unconditional release of all jailed workers and political prisoners in Iran.
