On Hassan Rouhani, Relations with the West and the Nuclear Question

wanted

Amidst the deafening hullabaloo over the “moderate” President Rouhani, the Islamic regime of Iran has intensified its executions, stepped up its harassment of women, legalised paedophilia by making it permissible for a step-father to marry their adopted daughters, amongst others.
Since Rouhani’s inauguration on 4 August, nearly 200 have been executed. Whilst he was preaching against violence in New York, 22 people were hanged in Iran. Had it not been for the protest actions taken by the families of those on death row facing imminent execution as well as the urgent intervention of the International Committee Against Execution, at least another 27 people would have been hanged.
Western governments, mainstream media and the pro-regime “opposition” are silent on the regime’s acts of open, premeditated murder designed to further terrorise the society at large. Even half-hearted defenders of human rights, such as Amnesty International, would rather remain quiet. It is as if all the problems of the people have been solved once words such as “moderation” and “the ushering in of a new chapter” in the relations with the United States and all the regime’s crimes have ended!
Despite the hypocrisy and where it concerns the relations between the regime and the people of Iran, there is no indication of “moderation.” The people’s lot is still oppression and violence. Executions are on the rise; prisons are full. The morality police are still harassing women, destitution and drug addiction are agonizingly rampant, and an all-round mixture of terror and insecurity continue to suppress the population at large.
From the people’s perspective, the real issue at hand is the very existence of the regime. The people want neither the regime’s nuclear energy nor its “moderate” and other factions. People are well aware that an end to the regime and all of its factions is the first step towards their liberation from the misery and oppression it has imposed on them for the past 34 years.
At a time when Khamenei’s policies have failed and the situation has reached a dead-end more than ever before, the people must come to the fore with their demands so as to change the narrative. The Islamic regime is not in a position to thwart the advancement of this immense force. Smashing hundreds of confiscated satellite dishes with tanks in public is indicative of its fear of millions of people gaining access to the opposition’s media rather than its power in intimidating them. The wave of executions is giving rise to a converse wave of resistance. Students are rising up; the women are facing the forces of oppression more resolutely than ever over their non-Islamic appearance, and the working class as the pillar of the people’s revolutionary struggles has no choice but to appear ever more organised and strong. The heads of the regime are well aware that they are no match for the people.
The WPI calls on the people of Iran to step up their protests and opposition. The regime is on its way out.
